Min Qualifications

RN with Bachelor's in Nursing, four years of clinical RN experience and approved specialty certification. Must possess and maintain a current RN license or valid temporary permit to practice in Texas.

Job Description:

Proficient Clinician. Possesses knowledge and skill to meet standards for competent professional nursing practice as specified in the Texas Nurse Practice Act. Practice is characterized by a balance of interdependent/independent decision-making and a consistent holistic approach to patient care. Proficiently functions with the interdisciplinary team; initiates team action to address patient care problems. Serves as a strong clinical leader on the unit. Directs others in responding to emergent or unusual situations. Takes the lead in developing, implementing and evaluating evidence-based standards of practice for specialty area. Provides patient care through nursing practices based upon the American Nurses Association Standards of Practice and UTMB¿s three domains for competency and advancement: Professional Practice, Professional Performance and Performance Involvement.

Specific Job Related Duties

This position will function as a Lactation Consultant (LC) and function as a member of the multi-disciplinary health care team as a consultant, educator, and mentor to nurses, healthcare professionals, and patients. LC consistently demonstrates behaviors that model the UTMB Health’s mission statement, core values, and standards of conduct.

Qualification Requirements:

- International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) Preffered.
- Preferred: 3-4 years experienced RN in neonatal and/or maternal- newborn setting
- Preferred: 3-5 years clinical experience in LC role

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

- Possesses verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with patients, patients. families, staff, physicians, and ancillary departments
- Possesses critical thinking skills necessary to organize and prepare plan of care
- Ability to accurately assess milk transfer during breastfeeding session and provide appropriate interventions
- Knowledge of nursing process, special breastfeeding situations, current trends, and research developments in the area of practice
- Ability to walk and stand continuously, up to 80% of work time
- Knowledge and assessment of newborn, late preterm and premature infants
- Utilizes interpreter or interpreter phone for non-English speaking patients and documents accordingly
- Supports and develops lactation programs and activities to promote breastfeeding
- Review patient EMR to identify potential risk factors that may impact lactation success
- Addresses patient complaints to appropriate individual(s) in a timely manner
- Member of local and National Lactation Association
- Participates in Lactation Quality Improvement initiatives
- Knowledge of the internet to facilitate literature searches, reviews and professional networking

Position requires extensive periods of talking, walking, standing, bending, pushing and some lifting of equipment, work is performed on L&D, Mother/Baby inpatient units or units that provide services to OB, pediatric and/or neonatal patients. Exposure to infections and contagious disease is possible. Protective measures are followed and protective clothing is utilized as directed by the established policy.Candidate will work some evening, weekend, and holiday shifts as needed for coverage.
